I have a coarse wheel on one side (60grit Bay state gray wheel) and a very fine wheel on the other (I think it''s a 180grit brown/tan colored wheel by Norton, leaves a beautiful polished edge). I hone my tools after grinding. The more polished the edge, the better your finish. Now for carbide.

For normal offhand grinding of tool steel aluminium oxide or silicon carbide will do nicely, a course wheel for rapid shaping on one side maybe 36 grit and a fine wheel the other side for sharpening maybe 80 grit.

It''s very important to take the time getting the tool perfectly parallel to your grinding wheel. If you don''t you will grind more off one side than the other on rounded tools. Only complaint is the tool is not wide enough to fit a 1 1/2 inch bowl gouge. Not sure if this company makes a larger size. Hope they do.
