This article examines the policy framework in place for smallscale gold mining in Zimbabwe. Through an analysis of stakeholder interviews and industry performance, the paper argues that the main government initiatives to manage gold mining in recent years have proved counterproductive, as economic returns from minerals have hemorrhaged due to increased illegal activity.
Smallscale mining is tolerated, and sometimes encouraged, in Zimbabwe due to the practices significant contributions to the countrys economy. Up to 500,000 people are estimated to work in smallscale mining operations, which were responsible for nearly half of the tonnes of gold produced in Zimbabwe in 2017.
It was ranked among the top ten countries with the largest mineral deposits and above that this has seen most people opting for small scale mining methods especially in chrome and gold. Even though small scale mining in Zimbabwe is an activity that has been ongoing since the precolonial times, it was legalized in the 20th Century.
